ODEM and the Blockchain in Education West Conference

Oct. 17, 2018 / in Blockchain News / by ODEM IO

A remarkable gathering of representatives of U.S. universities, colleges and blockchain companies occurred on Oct. 12 at Microsoft’s Sunnyvale campus in the heart of Silicon Valley.

Organized by San Jose’s Evergreen Community College District, the Blockchain in Education West conference brought together a Who’s Who of education administration from across the western U.S. to discuss with leading blockchain companies how and why the technology will impact the learning industry.

School systems, community colleges and universities outnumbered attendees from ODEM, creator of the On-Demand Education Marketplace, and other commercial providers of blockchain services. In my experience, blockchain conferences typically attract more developers than potential clients.

ODEM and Peacetones

Oct. 12, 2018 / in Blockchain News / by ODEM IO

At On-Demand Education Marketplace, we believe in the power of technology and innovation to make the world a better place. Our sponsorship of PeaceTones, a nonprofit record label for performing artists in the developing world, is an extension of that belief.

PeaceTones is working with remarkable local musicians from Haiti to Bangladesh and Timor-Leste to promote social justice by amplifying the voices of refugees and other less-fortunate populations. An example is The World United in Song, a project led by David Levy, a New York-based human rights lawyer and jazz musician.

Levy is in the final stages of launching an album of 11 songs and videos written and performed by members of various population groups. The performers include members of Myanmar’s persecuted Rohingya people who have taken refuge in camps in Bangladesh, and Mely Fernandez, a rapper, musician and former child soldier who fought in East Timor’s war of independence against Indonesia.

ODEM Gets Blended Learning

Oct. 4, 2018 / in Blockchain News / by ODEM IO

At On-Demand Education Marketplace (ODEM) we’re always open to exploring innovative ways to make higher education more effective. One pathway to improving students’ engagement and knowledge retention is through blended learning, a marriage of in-person teaching with online digital media.

In the past I’ve highlighted the limits of pure online education. That being said, I’m excited about the potential to improve learning outcomes of programs on the ODEM Platform, our blockchain-based education portal. We’re looking forward to skillfully combining in-person instruction with exceptional online content.

ODEM and Education Skill Badges

Oct. 02, 2018 / in Blockchain News / by ODEM IO

Do you have a skill or area of knowledge that you’ve mastered but don’t have a way of proving proficiency to prospective employers, customers or clients?

It could be a second language, tasks you completed as a community volunteer or even an aptitude for paragliding or catering for large groups.

If you have ever played a video game, it’s possible you’ve had a character with increasingly powerful abilities displayed on a skill tree. Players will start with lower level skills that open up new branches or show improvement in already acquired skills as they progress through the game. Depending on how a player decides to grow a skill tree, special abilities or increased access to high-level game content are granted.

ODEM and Educational Sponsorships

Sept. 26, 2018 / in Blockchain News / by ODEM IO

Have you ever donated or considered giving to a charitable cause and wondered how the money would be spent? Did the funds achieve your intended goal?

I’ve asked those questions many times in the context of accountability and a worrying decline in public willingness to give to worthy causes.

At On-Demand Education Marketplace, we understand the importance of providing peace of mind to people who give generously in the field of education.

ODEM Activation on the Mainnet: What’s the Big Deal?

Sept. 25, 2018 / in Blockchain News / by ODEM IO

ODEM, creator of the On-Demand Education Marketplace, achieved a major technical milestone last week by activating the ODEM Platform’s decentralized application (DApp) on the Ethereum Blockchain, or mainnet.

Dr. Adel ElMessiry, ODEM’s Chief Technology Mentor, activated the DApp before a live audience at the #SWITCH! Conference in Vilnius, Lithuania. Immediately following the achievement, he generated a blockchain-based educational certificate for Antanas Guoga, the Lithuanian representative to the European Parliament. Creation of the certificate was a first for the ODEM Platform.

ODEM and Program Revenue Sharing

Enabling educators to efficiently partner with other academics through curriculum licensing is an important part of our mission at On-Demand Education Marketplace. It’s one example of how we’re using blockchain technology to make high-quality, in-person education more accessible, affordable and verifiable.

Through the use of blockchain-based smart contracts, our ODEM Platform will allow educators to license their curriculum to other instructors and automatically share in revenue from the teaching of the content. Smart contracts that execute automatically based on real-world inputs, will manage payments and disbursements on the platform.

ODEM and Blockchain Certificates

June 15, 2018/in Blockchain News /by ODEM IO

ODEM, the world’s first On-Demand Education Marketplace, is committed to delivering a core promise of blockchain technology with digitally verified education certificates.

Developing secure and portable records of a student’s academic history is in line with our mission to make higher education more accessible and affordable. By using blockchain technology, the encryption software that underpins digital currencies such as Ethereum, we’re shifting control of academic records of achievement from educational institutions into the hands of students.

“Blockchain technology will accelerate the end of a paper-based system for certificates,” the European Union’s Joint Research Centre said last year in a report on blockchain’s potential to change the education industry. “Many kinds of certificates issued by educational organisations, in particular qualifications and records of achievement, can be permanently and reliably secured using blockchain technology.”
