A Conversation with ODEM’s Steve Nam

Dec. 14, 2018 / in Blockchain News / by ODEM IO

Steven Nam has been an antitrust lawyer, a law school professor, and a chief strategy officer at a Silicon Valley startup. Now he’s joining ODEM as a strategic advisor. Steven recently spoke with ODEM’s Marketing Team about blockchain technology, his personal aspirations and the books shaping his thinking in real time.

How did you get involved with ODEM?

At the end of October, I was headed to the Malta Blockchain Summit where I was to moderate a panel on regulation in the blockchain space. ODEM reached out to me. I did some research and ODEM’s mission to reshape education resonated with me. I was approached by a good number of projects. But ODEM definitely resonated. It's something I've been thinking about on my own for a while and one thing led to another.

What’s your take on ODEM and the current state of education?

I like to think of higher education as a right rather than a privilege. In recent decades it has become more of a privilege. There are centralized power structures in education. They set the rules. They set the tuition. They set everything about education. And it’s almost a privilege to have an education, not just in the U.S., but in many parts of the world. Education itself has become this joyless process. It doesn’t have to be that way.

I've been in education. I've lectured at the University of California, Davis for a year. I taught five courses and I remember thinking, let's try to do this more my way. Let's not have these artificial kinds of restraints. But the problem is if you're an institution, there's protocol, right? You can’t really stray too far.

ODEM represents a new approach to education as it could actually get rid of all sorts of superfluous constraints and get back to the pure basics of teaching and learning. Why is the status quo so restrictive? Why can’t education provide more open access to benefit the student and instructor? ODEM is about breaking down barriers to education and removing needless intermediaries. It’s also about getting back to the pure basics of blockchain technology.

Connecting with Ken Finch, ODEM’s Head of Business Development

Dec. 3, 2018 / in Blockchain News / by ODEM IO

As the ODEM Platform moves toward launch in February 2019, Ken Finch, ODEM’s Head of Business Development, took a few minutes from his busy schedule to provide ODEM Marketing with an overview of his top priorities.

Ken, how do you describe On-Demand Education Marketplace to someone unfamiliar with our project?

In the most basic sense, ODEM connects educators and students to provide targeted, custom education for students looking for specific topics, specific timing, and scheduling. The ODEM Platform also acts as a blockchain-based records-management system. It supports ODEM’s mission of making education more accessible, affordable, transferable, and verifiable.

ODEM and Training Education Records

Oct. 18, 2018 / in Blockchain News / by ODEM IO

At On-Demand Education Marketplace, helping individuals keep track of a lifetime of learning is a critical part of our mission to make education more accessible, affordable, transferable and verifiable. Among the most important service offerings on our blockchain-based ODEM Platform are Training Education Records (TERs), which are digital certificates to help employees curate a personal and secure roster of their on-the-job training credentials.

TERs provide verified proof that individuals have received training in specific subject areas such as new software tools or changes to a company’s products or services. TERs are similar to ODEM’s Education Skill Badges, except that they’re issued by employers rather than educational institutions. I like to think of TERs as building blocks in one’s professional repertoire and immutable proof of ongoing commitment to lifelong learning.

ODEM’s TERs automatically create a record on the blockchain for employers to manage information about the courses their staff have taken. This is important when specific employee training is required by regulators such as the U.S. Occupational and Safety and Health Administration. The federal agency enforces safety standards for companies in construction, manufacturing and industries where workers may be exposed to dangerous environments.

ODEM and the Blockchain in Education West Conference

Oct. 17, 2018 / in Blockchain News / by ODEM IO

A remarkable gathering of representatives of U.S. universities, colleges and blockchain companies occurred on Oct. 12 at Microsoft’s Sunnyvale campus in the heart of Silicon Valley.

Organized by San Jose’s Evergreen Community College District, the Blockchain in Education West conference brought together a Who’s Who of education administration from across the western U.S. to discuss with leading blockchain companies how and why the technology will impact the learning industry.

School systems, community colleges and universities outnumbered attendees from ODEM, creator of the On-Demand Education Marketplace, and other commercial providers of blockchain services. In my experience, blockchain conferences typically attract more developers than potential clients.

ODEM and Peacetones

Oct. 12, 2018 / in Blockchain News / by ODEM IO

At On-Demand Education Marketplace, we believe in the power of technology and innovation to make the world a better place. Our sponsorship of PeaceTones, a nonprofit record label for performing artists in the developing world, is an extension of that belief.

PeaceTones is working with remarkable local musicians from Haiti to Bangladesh and Timor-Leste to promote social justice by amplifying the voices of refugees and other less-fortunate populations. An example is The World United in Song, a project led by David Levy, a New York-based human rights lawyer and jazz musician.

Levy is in the final stages of launching an album of 11 songs and videos written and performed by members of various population groups. The performers include members of Myanmar’s persecuted Rohingya people who have taken refuge in camps in Bangladesh, and Mely Fernandez, a rapper, musician and former child soldier who fought in East Timor’s war of independence against Indonesia.

At On-Demand Education Marketplace (ODEM) we’re always open to exploring innovative ways to make higher education more effective. One pathway to improving students’ engagement and knowledge retention is through blended learning, a marriage of in-person teaching with online digital media.

In the past I’ve highlighted the limits of pure online education. That being said, I’m excited about the potential to improve learning outcomes of programs on the ODEM Platform, our blockchain-based education portal. We’re looking forward to skillfully combining in-person instruction with exceptional online content.

It could be a second language, tasks you completed as a community volunteer or even an aptitude for paragliding or catering for large groups.

If you have ever played a video game, it’s possible you’ve had a character with increasingly powerful abilities displayed on a skill tree. Players will start with lower level skills that open up new branches or show improvement in already acquired skills as they progress through the game. Depending on how a player decides to grow a skill tree, special abilities or increased access to high-level game content are granted.

ODEM and Blockchain Certificates

June 15, 2018/in Blockchain News /by ODEM IO

ODEM, the world’s first On-Demand Education Marketplace, is committed to delivering a core promise of blockchain technology with digitally verified education certificates.

Developing secure and portable records of a student’s academic history is in line with our mission to make higher education more accessible and affordable. By using blockchain technology, the encryption software that underpins digital currencies such as Ethereum, we’re shifting control of academic records of achievement from educational institutions into the hands of students.

“Blockchain technology will accelerate the end of a paper-based system for certificates,” the European Union’s Joint Research Centre said last year in a report on blockchain’s potential to change the education industry. “Many kinds of certificates issued by educational organisations, in particular qualifications and records of achievement, can be permanently and reliably secured using blockchain technology.”

Digital Delivery Offers Hope of New Revenue Streams

Economic Challenges in Higher Education

Anyone associated with higher education is painfully aware of the dilemma facing the traditional academic environment. Costs of delivery (faculty, facilities, salaries and administrative expenses) in U.S. colleges and universities over the last 20 years have exceeded all expectations. The price of delivering University level education has risen almost 200% from 1997 to 2017 (in contrast to a 55.6% cost of living increase).

ODEM – The Full Vision and Pre-Beta Previews

June 7, 2018/in News and Media /by Richard Maaghul

The ODEM Team has been hard at work developing our core ODEM Platform. We’re delighted to share highlights with you from last month’s publication of our technical whitepaper.

For those new to the ODEM, we’re creating the world’s first On-Demand Education Marketplace for students and educators to come together in pursuit of exceptional opportunities to learn and to teach. Students will use the ODEM Platform, an online software-as-a-service platform, to discover and register for academic programs around the world. Educators will promote their courses and teaching talents. Blockchain technology and associated digital tokens combine to automate the organization and delivery of in-person learning experiences. Supported by a growing community of students, educators and service providers, the platform embodies ODEM’s mission to improve the accessibility and affordability of higher education.

ODEM differs from many other blockchain-based enterprises because it relies on two types of digital tokens instead of one. ODEM-Tokens (ODEM-T) provide access and function as a core platform currency. They’re also used for student-and-educator staking, or registering, for specific academic offerings. ODEM Credits (ODEM-C), the other type of token, act as a secure deed, or certificate of a student’s verified student scholastic history.
