ODEM and the Blockchain in Education West Conference

Oct. 17, 2018 / in Blockchain News / by ODEM IO

A remarkable gathering of representatives of U.S. universities, colleges and blockchain companies occurred on Oct. 12 at Microsoft’s Sunnyvale campus in the heart of Silicon Valley.

Organized by San Jose’s Evergreen Community College District, the Blockchain in Education West conference brought together a Who’s Who of education administration from across the western U.S. to discuss with leading blockchain companies how and why the technology will impact the learning industry.

School systems, community colleges and universities outnumbered attendees from ODEM, creator of the On-Demand Education Marketplace, and other commercial providers of blockchain services. In my experience, blockchain conferences typically attract more developers than potential clients.

ODEM and Peacetones

Oct. 12, 2018 / in Blockchain News / by ODEM IO

At On-Demand Education Marketplace, we believe in the power of technology and innovation to make the world a better place. Our sponsorship of PeaceTones, a nonprofit record label for performing artists in the developing world, is an extension of that belief.

PeaceTones is working with remarkable local musicians from Haiti to Bangladesh and Timor-Leste to promote social justice by amplifying the voices of refugees and other less-fortunate populations. An example is The World United in Song, a project led by David Levy, a New York-based human rights lawyer and jazz musician.

Levy is in the final stages of launching an album of 11 songs and videos written and performed by members of various population groups. The performers include members of Myanmar’s persecuted Rohingya people who have taken refuge in camps in Bangladesh, and Mely Fernandez, a rapper, musician and former child soldier who fought in East Timor’s war of independence against Indonesia.

ODEM Gets Blended Learning

Oct. 4, 2018 / in Blockchain News / by ODEM IO

At On-Demand Education Marketplace (ODEM) we’re always open to exploring innovative ways to make higher education more effective. One pathway to improving students’ engagement and knowledge retention is through blended learning, a marriage of in-person teaching with online digital media.

In the past I’ve highlighted the limits of pure online education. That being said, I’m excited about the potential to improve learning outcomes of programs on the ODEM Platform, our blockchain-based education portal. We’re looking forward to skillfully combining in-person instruction with exceptional online content.

ODEM and Education Skill Badges

Oct. 02, 2018 / in Blockchain News / by ODEM IO

Do you have a skill or area of knowledge that you’ve mastered but don’t have a way of proving proficiency to prospective employers, customers or clients?

It could be a second language, tasks you completed as a community volunteer or even an aptitude for paragliding or catering for large groups.

If you have ever played a video game, it’s possible you’ve had a character with increasingly powerful abilities displayed on a skill tree. Players will start with lower level skills that open up new branches or show improvement in already acquired skills as they progress through the game. Depending on how a player decides to grow a skill tree, special abilities or increased access to high-level game content are granted.

ODEM and Educational Sponsorships

Sept. 26, 2018 / in Blockchain News / by ODEM IO

Have you ever donated or considered giving to a charitable cause and wondered how the money would be spent? Did the funds achieve your intended goal?

I’ve asked those questions many times in the context of accountability and a worrying decline in public willingness to give to worthy causes.

At On-Demand Education Marketplace, we understand the importance of providing peace of mind to people who give generously in the field of education.

ODEM and Program Revenue Sharing

Enabling educators to efficiently partner with other academics through curriculum licensing is an important part of our mission at On-Demand Education Marketplace. It’s one example of how we’re using blockchain technology to make high-quality, in-person education more accessible, affordable and verifiable.

Through the use of blockchain-based smart contracts, our ODEM Platform will allow educators to license their curriculum to other instructors and automatically share in revenue from the teaching of the content. Smart contracts that execute automatically based on real-world inputs, will manage payments and disbursements on the platform.

We’re not only encouraging and enabling lifelong learning at ODEM, we provide students with the tools to securely store and control access to their verified academic history.

One of those tools is the Window Seat, our term for permissioned access to a student’s scholastic records for employers, universities, and educators.

Window Seats are integral to the ODEM Platform, an education-focused portal founded on the Ethereum blockchain. When the platform is completed, ODEM will be the world’s premier provider of high-caliber, verifiable education at an affordable price.

ODEM and Blockchain Certificates

June 15, 2018/in Blockchain News /by ODEM IO

ODEM, the world’s first On-Demand Education Marketplace, is committed to delivering a core promise of blockchain technology with digitally verified education certificates.

Developing secure and portable records of a student’s academic history is in line with our mission to make higher education more accessible and affordable. By using blockchain technology, the encryption software that underpins digital currencies such as Ethereum, we’re shifting control of academic records of achievement from educational institutions into the hands of students.

“Blockchain technology will accelerate the end of a paper-based system for certificates,” the European Union’s Joint Research Centre said last year in a report on blockchain’s potential to change the education industry. “Many kinds of certificates issued by educational organisations, in particular qualifications and records of achievement, can be permanently and reliably secured using blockchain technology.”

Hello ODEM Community!

San Francisco Meetup

Mark your calendar! Dr. Adel El Messiry, ODEM’s Chief Technology Mentor, will make a special presentation about the ODEM Platform and its capabilities on Wednesday, June 27 at 5:30 p.m. at ODEM @ Spaces, Levi Plaza, 1160 Battery Street, Suite 100, San Francisco. A catered reception will follow.

Dr. El Messiry will emphasize the platform’s full-cycle closed beta and its ability to engage end-to-end working systems. This includes the web interface, educational program management and creation, the materializing of events on the blockchain, and the retrieval of hashes for events and other web-based activities.

ODEM and Creating Digital Identity for Rohingya Refugees

ODEM is joining with the Internet Bar Organization to provide members of the stateless Rohingya muslim community with digital identities. We’re building a coalition of local leaders and international aid organizations to address basic digital rights. The tie-up with the IBO, called the Rohingya Refugee Rescue Project, will use blockchain technology and proprietary ODEM systems to verify and secure identities for the Rohingya, a persecuted minority with roots in northwestern Myanmar.

ODEM’s database services and credentials-verification tools will be used to specifically assist Rohingya who live in the Cox’s Bazar resettlement camp in Bangladesh. Establishing identities for them is a first step toward helping the community to recover from its forced expulsion from Myanmar.

Digital Delivery Offers Hope of New Revenue Streams

Economic Challenges in Higher Education

Anyone associated with higher education is painfully aware of the dilemma facing the traditional academic environment. Costs of delivery (faculty, facilities, salaries and administrative expenses) in U.S. colleges and universities over the last 20 years have exceeded all expectations. The price of delivering University level education has risen almost 200% from 1997 to 2017 (in contrast to a 55.6% cost of living increase).

ODEM – The Full Vision and Pre-Beta Previews

June 7, 2018/in News and Media /by Richard Maaghul

The ODEM Team has been hard at work developing our core ODEM Platform. We’re delighted to share highlights with you from last month’s publication of our technical whitepaper.

For those new to the ODEM, we’re creating the world’s first On-Demand Education Marketplace for students and educators to come together in pursuit of exceptional opportunities to learn and to teach. Students will use the ODEM Platform, an online software-as-a-service platform, to discover and register for academic programs around the world. Educators will promote their courses and teaching talents. Blockchain technology and associated digital tokens combine to automate the organization and delivery of in-person learning experiences. Supported by a growing community of students, educators and service providers, the platform embodies ODEM’s mission to improve the accessibility and affordability of higher education.

ODEM differs from many other blockchain-based enterprises because it relies on two types of digital tokens instead of one. ODEM-Tokens (ODEM-T) provide access and function as a core platform currency. They’re also used for student-and-educator staking, or registering, for specific academic offerings. ODEM Credits (ODEM-C), the other type of token, act as a secure deed, or certificate of a student’s verified student scholastic history.

We’ve Filed Provisional Patents!

June 6, 2018/in Blockchain News /by Richard Maaghul

It should come as no surprise that ODEM, creator of the world’s first On-Demand Education Marketplace, has filed for provisional U.S. patents on two critical elements of our blockchain-based education platform.

ODEM, which is headquartered in Switzerland, is using blockchain technology and associated digital tokens to automate the organization and delivery of in-person learning experiences. We’re proud to have developed proprietary solutions that will fundamentally change the way students access and manage their education.

Recently, our company and Dr. Adel El Messiry, ODEM’s chief of technology, initiated the process of asserting ownership rights to the technological foundation of the ODEM Platform. We’re seeking patents on the platform’s system of staking, or registering for, academic programs as well as unique design aspects of the system’s digital-token model. The filings were made to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

ODEM: Keeping Our Promises

May 5, 2018/in Blockchain News /by ODEM IO

“Even a ship going in circles feels fast.” David Cain.

On a recent long-distance flight pondered the difference between being busy and getting things done. Sometimes people get so wrapped up in “doing” that they lose sight of the importance of “finishing.”

That’s why I want our community at On-Demand Education Marketplace to know that we’re moving forward steadily on our corporate road map. Yes, we’re busy, but we’re also overtaking significant mileposts such as:

  • The recent listing of ODEM Tokens on the Bitfinex and Ethfinex digital currency exchanges.
  • And, the efficient distribution of ODEM-T as part of our crowdsale’s bounty and rewards programs.
